A Market That Scaled Faster Than Anyone Expected
In less than a decade, China has transformed from a closed domestic used-car market into one of the world’s most important vehicle export hubs. According to the China Automobile Dealers Association (CADA), used car exports have grown at double-digit rates every year since the pilot program opened in 2019, reaching hundreds of thousands of units annually.
Three forces drive this growth:
1. A massive domestic replacement cycle. Chinese consumers upgrade vehicles faster than most markets, which means late-model, low-mileage cars continuously enter the used market — many under 5 years old with fewer than 60,000 km.
2. The rise of Chinese NEV brands. BYD, Chery, Geely, GAC and MG have flooded the domestic market with feature-rich vehicles. When these cars re-enter the market used, they offer exceptional value for importers.
3. Government support. The Ministry of Commerce has steadily expanded the list of licensed regions and simplified export licensing, second-hand vehicle export is now a fully institutionalized trade channel.
Why Chinese Used Cars Are Price-Competitive
For buyers in Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and Southeast Asia, the math is straightforward:
– A 2022–2023 Chinese sedan with 30,000–50,000 km typically prices 20–35% below an equivalent Japanese domestic market unit.
– New-energy vehicles (BEV/PHEV) are abundant in China but scarce in most import markets — a genuine product gap.
– Parts availability has improved dramatically as Chinese OEMs build overseas distribution.
